MILESTONES OF POSTAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

• Construction of new Post offices:

In collaboration with Gamworks, three new Post Offices were constructed at Bakau, Soma and Kerewan. These were inaugurated by H.E. The President.

• Rehabilitated Post Offices:

Banjul, Brikama, Kaur, Farafenni and Basse Post Offices have been in existence since Colonial days. Considering their ages and the state they were in, Gamworks was again approached to have these offices rehabilitated. Works on the rehabilitation commenced in 1998 and were completed in 1999.

• Technical Assistance from the Universal Postal Union (UPU):

Periodically, the UPU assists postal administrations of developing countries in different areas of postal development. In Year 2001 Multi-year Integrated Project (MIP) for the period 2002 to 2004. Assistance received so far include:

  • Three Postal Vehicles
  • Three Computers
  • Two Photocopiers
  • Five moped Motorcycles
  • In-house training on International Airmail Accounting for ten members of Staff.
  • Consultancy service on Postal Reform and Restructuring.

During the second half of this year, we expect to receive:

  • Four additional Computers
  • One Postal Vehicle
  • A consult who will organize a training session on marketing for at least 10 members of staff.

• The UPU also supports postal administrations for improving their quality of service. In year 2003, they funded the following projects:

  • Development and hosting of the GPO website, www.gampost.gm
  • Development and implementation of customers enquiry database
  • In-house training of 12 staff on customer care.

We are presently developing a project for submission to the UPU for funding during this year. This will be in the areas:

  • Design and implementation of costing and pricing systems
  • Procurement of an international interactive tracking and tracing software for registered and parcel mail.
