MILESTONES
OF POSTAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS
• Construction of new Post offices:
In collaboration
with Gamworks, three new Post Offices were
constructed at Bakau, Soma and Kerewan.
These were inaugurated by H.E. The President.
• Rehabilitated Post Offices:
Banjul, Brikama, Kaur, Farafenni and Basse
Post Offices have been in existence since
Colonial days. Considering their ages and
the state they were in, Gamworks was again
approached to have these offices rehabilitated.
Works on the rehabilitation commenced in
1998 and were completed in 1999.
• Technical Assistance from the Universal
Postal Union (UPU):
Periodically, the UPU assists postal administrations
of developing countries in different areas
of postal development. In Year 2001 Multi-year
Integrated Project (MIP) for the period
2002 to 2004. Assistance received so far
include:
- Three Postal Vehicles
- Three Computers
- Two Photocopiers
- Five moped Motorcycles
- In-house training on International
Airmail Accounting for ten members of
Staff.
- Consultancy service on Postal Reform
and Restructuring.
During the second half of this year, we
expect to receive:
- Four additional Computers
- One Postal Vehicle
- A consult who will organize a training
session on marketing for at least 10 members
of staff.
• The UPU also supports postal administrations
for improving their quality of service.
In year 2003, they funded the following
projects:
- Development and hosting of the GPO website,
www.gampost.gm
- Development and implementation of customers
enquiry database
- In-house training of 12 staff on customer
care.
We are presently developing a project for
submission to the UPU for funding during
this year. This will be in the areas:
- Design and implementation of costing
and pricing systems
- Procurement of an international interactive
tracking and tracing software for registered
and parcel mail.
